TASKS cont...

Local

This is a design company I found in the small town where I live, Letchworth. This company doesn't interest me much, they seem to quite structured work? In the nicest way possible, work I find slightly dull. Although this isn't the type of company I want to become involved with, I could learn something from having work experience there, so I won't cross them off the list. In fact, the likely hood of getting placement with this little company is higher then with one of the larger companies...unfortunately.

National,

This is one I researched earlier, it is based in Manchester, London and Blackburn. This is a much larger design company, perhaps the fact it is national and also deals with higher leveled projects means it appears to be a more lively place to work. It is also situated in three large cities, as appose the 'Signal' which is one, small company in the small town, Letchworth (where I live).  The projects are of a higher standard, work relating to the film industry is always going to be an impressive project. This million pound projects overall, pay big money to these mass markets in which their promotional work is produced. Due to these larger corporations having a higher income, they will pay their employees more than a small industry, however their skills also must be of a higher standard. I don't think, the level and quality of work within the smaller branch in Letchworth, is much lower, I don't doubt their capability, just perhaps the standards of the projects set.

"These are some of the reasons we love to work within entertainment - we get to play magician. Whether it's a film poster, billboard, DVD sleeve, or film trailer, we assist in creating the illusion that producers and distributors need in helping to build awareness with an audience and ultimately contributing to the vision and passion a director has instilled in their story.
We can handle any size of domestic and international campaign, providing everything from design for print, outdoor, consumer & trade press, to TV online & digital activity, POS and packaging, promotions, copywriting & tagline origination. These services are bolstered by our great creative ideas and clear strategic thinking."

European,

CAN'T FIND ANY

International,

Empire Design, has businesses in New York and London.

What they want --- >

The requirements this international company requires from its employees are very specific. This indicates high expectations with work produced and employees taken on.

HOW WILL THEY FIND ME?

Throughout this PPD and Enterprise programme, I am going to promote myself as a designer, in some form.

 - Mail Out
- Website
- Emails
- Letters
- PPD sent through online access?

I have always wanted to design my own website, advertising me and my work. I think this will be an effective way to promote myself. I have spoken to John about this idea, and he has also said how it is a good way to constantly upload and show work to chosen placements/clients. I also think letters will be a more direct way to contact companies I am interested in. I will construct these later on though when I have better knowledge of how to write, what to write and who too. However, I think I should include information about the type of design work I like, I will do this by explaining to them what I like, and also through images of work I have already produced. I will also say what I like about their own work, this will fall under what 'they want to hear' and also a way of showing the work I like.

WHO ELSE IS OUT THERE

There is a lot of competition.
 - CURRENT STUDENTS
 - FREELANCERS

I think my main concern regarding who I am competing against, are current students. I feel that they are the closest to me in the sense of where they are, and what they do, that comparisons will be easy to make. This can either be bad or good. I know I will be catagorised as a student when I am contacting places, and if there is another student who is also getting in contact then they will be an immediate threat. It is a case of separating myself from everyone else.

HOW AM I DIFFERENT?
- I like many different areas of design so I feel I could approach briefs in a wide variety of ways.
- Through experience dealing with lots of different medias of design, I feel I know about different types and how to use them?

MISSION STATEMENT

In my opinion a piece of design doesn't have to be clear, but it does have to clever. I want to be able to communicate something purposeful, to make even a slight change through original and interesting ideas.

I like to communicate with a range of different medias, working towards work thst is simple but effective. I want to make my audience reconsider a decision, advertise by developing relationships, inspire, and let others experience forms of art through communication. Personal with drive.

TASKS

Task 1,

What do I have to offer? What skills do I have? What are my creative aims?
I have a passion for lens based work, I like working with cameras and recently I really want to experiment with video cameras, producing films? short films? working in advertising? Anyway, as for the photography, I have always loved films, my dream of becoming an actress is still here, but at the moment I think I am quite happy focusing on design. However, I do still want to be a part of films...in some way? I like the idea of designing film posters, I think some are really good, and they include type/image, so in my eyes they are graphic design. I don't want to narrow my choices down too much, I really don't have much of a life plan actually, at the moment, I would like to do fruit picking in Austrailia (ha), but this idea will probably fade within a few months. Anyway, what I am confused about is how I get into these industries, working with films, but designing the posters? Is it freelance work?
I also love perfume ads, well, not all of them, some are rubbish, I want to create an amazing perfume ad, I think they should be beautifully produced, with amazing photography involved. They should be small films, there is so much you can do with them, I think it would be fun to work with a project like that.
Industry/clients/placements?

I found ths website, it has a link of some of the design companies that deal with Film posters?
http://www.impawards.com/designers/index.html

I've just realised, they might all be American?
I can search individual film posters, and then the design company in which they were designed.

Based in London! (but aren't recruiting), but this website (impawards) is good, more research needed

This organisation seemed pretty good, but it's located in Hollywood...

This sounds promising? The Creative Partnership.

Based in London, Manchester and Blackburn.

Based in New York and London

Based in Stafford, but I'm not that keen on this company,

INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTIONS.

Situated in Hollywood, shame, they produced some of the top theatrical prints. However, I don't think all these companies are that different, they seem to produce the same quality of work. I reckon reputation and reccomendation is what gets these companies more project offers, this particular site has had a lot of film poster design projects, once they produce one good film poster, then others will go to them.

Based in Los Angeles, although, it started off as a print studio in London!
What they are interested in as clients;

"We are always interested in meeting new people who love what they do. If you are an illustrator, photography student, designer, art director, copywriter, web designer, web developer, 3D artist, A/V editor, animator or motion graphics designer we invite you to submit samples of your work."
